Pain has a habit of returning time and time again. When repetitive tension, or severe increases in tension build in the muscle and the connective tissue, neuromyofascial trigger points can develop.  Neuro refers to nerves, myo refers to muscle and fascia refers to connective tissue. Lets call them trigger points for short.  These trigger points are hyper contracted fibres of muscle and connective tissue. Hyper sensitised pain receptors are interwoven into the tissue.

Stress

Tension is synonymous with stress.  We are exposed to four major stresses; physical stress (of which postural stress is a form), emotional stress (which include our worry patterns), thermal stress (exposure to hot and cold environments, heat stroke, hypo and hyperthermia) and oxidative stress (the stress on our body due to the toxic by-products of metabolism).  All these stresses erode the integrity of the muscle and skeletal system and activate pain receptors.  The body has a large capacity to be able to deal with stress.  However when a threshold is breached, it can be difficult to  restore balance to the system.

Faulty Biomechanics

It is these trigger points that can lead to the faulty biomechanics of the joints, and the development of many  pain syndromes. Over time the build up of trigger points leads to stiffness weakness and pain in the muscles and joints. This brings about faulty movement patterns in the joints and can eventually lead to degenerative changes – osteoarthritis.  The longer these trigger points have been building up the more painful a condition can be.

Pain Receptors

The pain receptors in the trigger points become hyper-sensitised which means that the longer they are active the less stimulus it takes to continue to activate them- peripheral sensitisation .   These pain receptors are firing pain signals into the spinal cord and brain, causing them to be hypersensitised – central sensitisation.  The consequence of this is that our perception of the pain is increased.  So as the trigger points become more deeply rooted, it takes less stress to stimulate them and the perception of the pain increases.

Vitamin D3 is essential to maintain health and well-being.  It has been long thought that vitamin D3 was only essential for strongs bones and to prevent rickets in children and osteomalacia (bone softening) in adults.  However research into the vitamin has intensified over the last 10 years, and the science identifies the need to increase our vitamin D3 levels above what was historically thought necessary so that we can protect ourself against many forms of cancer, including ; breast, colon and prostate cancer – reduce our risk of heart disease, heart attack and diabetes, and reduce our risk of infection (including viral infection such as influenza). Therefore Chiropractors recommend vitamin D.

The body of scientists at the forefront of this research recommend increasing our blood serum levels to between 50-70 ng/ml.  Their research indicates that 85% of the American population are deficient in the vitamin and that this may be associated with the epedemic of chronic diseases present today.

Vitamin D3 is produced in the skin from UVB rays in sunlight.  Research shows that the use of factor 15 sunblocks reduce vitamin D3 production by as much as 99% and that this is having a devastating effect on peoples health.   During the winter months we are in a UVB winter and do not produce any vitamin D3.  We therefore have to rely on the stores we have produced over the summer months.  However if we are not producing Vit D3 in the summer months then we are risk of being Vitamin D3 deficient.

Chiropractors recommend vitamin D and advise supplementing with vitamin D3.   Dosing is measured in International Units (IU) or micro-grams.  If your vitamin is in micrograms then use the conversion factor 1 microgram equals 40 IU.  Evidence indicates that for every 1000IU of Vitaminn D3 taken orally, blood serum levels increase by 10ng/ml.  Remember the advise is to get blood serum levels to between 50-70 ng/ml.

Muscle joint pain affects up to 80% of the population at some time in their lives.  For many these painful conditions are a constant source of misery. Muscle joint pain in many cases is due to the faulty biomechanics of the spine.  This can come about from a build up of tension in the supporting muscles and connective tissue, when there is an increase in load to the spine. This is the case when trauma effects the spine and when repetitive postural and occupational stress is present.  Typical traumas would be a whiplash injury to the neck, falling on an outstretched hand or falling onto the back or bottom.  Postural stress can be due to sitting at a computer for many hours or manual handling heavy loads.

Respiration is the process whereby the body converts glucose and oxygen to energy and vitality.  This occurs at the level of the cell, by structures known as mitochondria.  A by- product of this process is what we term free radicals.  Free radicals are very reactive molecules which react with the cells and tissues of the body, causing oxidation of the tissues and chronic systemic inflammation. This inflammatory process wears out the tissues and organs of the body and is a leading cause of degeneration, degenerative disease and chronic pain.

The essential fatty acids are omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9.  Omega -3 is present in oily fish, flaxseed, and walnuts.  Omega-6 is present in nuts and seeds and other vegetable oils and omega-9 is present in olive oil.

EPA is essential for the functioning of the brain and for nerve stimulation.

The ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 in our diet should be 1:1.  However, the western style diet heavily favours omega-6 and is low in omega-3.  This ratio is closer to 1:20 making it detrimental to health due to the increased risk of systemic inflammation and thus degeneration of the body. These conditions contribute to chronic pain syndromes.

DHA is now thought to constitute the building blocks of the brain.

Omega-3 fatty acids are used in the building and functioning of cell membranes.  They are therefore essential for maintaining the integrity of the cell, by influencing the transport of life supporting molecules into and out of the cell, and acting as a barrier to unwanted molecules.  Omega-3 also act as the precursor for cell messengers called prostaglandins. Prostaglandins help mediate inflammation in your tissues and are essential for combatting chronic inflammation due to free radical attack.

Omega 3 is present in oily fish and krill as the active ingredients eicosapentaenoic acid ( EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid( DHA) and in plants such as flaxseed, hemp, and walnuts as the active ingredient, alpha-linolenic  acid (ALA).  Plant based ALA is converted to EPA and DHA by way of an enzyme mediated process. However age and well- being status reduces the efficiency of this conversion process and scientists believe that even though it is important to take in plant based omega-3, it is even more vital to get adequate level of fish or krill based EPA/DHA.

DHA is now thought to constitute the building blocks of the brain, forming about 8% of the brain by weight.  This is why it is important for pregnant mothers to maintain an adequate supply during pregnancy.  EPA is essential for the functioning of the brain and for nerve stimulation.

There is debate about whether Krill oil is superior to fish oil and whether EPA is more potent than DHA. Also not all omega-3 products are created equal so make sure you buy quality products that guarantee their potency as well as their purity.

Triglyceride fish oils are at risk of going rancid due to oxidisation and as such they need to be taken with high dose anti-oxidants to reduce the effect of free radical attack.  Krill oil is at less risk of this as it contains the potent anti-oxidant, Astaxanthin.  Krill oil is a phospholipid rather than a triglyceride like the omega-3 fish oils.  This enhances it’s bio-availability which means it can be taken in smaller doses than fish oil to achieve the same effect.  Krill oil is also less likely to leave a fishy after taste.
